The first big decision....Time to grow up!

When we graduate from college unprepared, everything you think you know can become questionable—at least, that has been my experience. The first time I graduated college, I was full of dreams, entertainment goals, and potential, but I lacked true direction. Currently, I am attending the Los Angeles Film School to pursue my second degree. This time around, my decision was driven by a desire to update my skills, figure out my next steps in life, and address some issues I have encountered over the past few years. My first time around I can make all the excuses in the world about not having the right mentor, counselor, or guide, but the truth is every adult has choices, and we have to live with them.

So, what was the big decision I want to discuss today? I attended college in my hometown of Savannah, GA. During my last year, I interned at a CBS affiliate where I worked with the camera, edited the show, and operated graphics. Throughout my time in news, I constantly felt the urge to strive for more. The pay was minimum wage, and thankfully, I lived with my parents and had no real responsibilities. At that time, I had goals in music and dance, but I also needed to earn more money.

Eventually, I got the opportunity to work for Delta Airlines as a ramp agent. What a tough job it was! I directed planes, loaded luggage, and faced all kinds of weather conditions. The job was extremely demanding, especially since we were often understaffed. After some time, I had the chance to train as a ticket agent and gate agent at a new location. But months later, I was needed back to the ramp because they were short-staffed again at my old location.

Unfortunately, the ramp was even worse than my first experience.

Due to being overworked, I eventually got injured, and my back gave out. Doctors diagnosed me with degenerative disc disease and advised me to avoid this type of work, as well as to give up dancing and any sports. This was a wake-up call; my job was preventing me from reaching my true goals. After three months of physical therapy, I was ready to return to work, but I knew this situation wouldn't last. One of the main reasons I took the job was for the free flights. I used those flights to travel to Los Angeles to check the vibe, take some dance classes, and look for places to live. Next, I flew to Atlanta and did the same.

Ultimately, I decided that Atlanta was the smarter choice, especially since I had a friend who was moving with me. I attempted to transfer to Delta in Atlanta, but there were complications. So, I decided to take a leap of faith and make the big decision to move. I saved up money, started applying for jobs, and secured an apartment with my friend. I was not young and naive, but rather optimistic and strong-willed. Moving to a new city was scary and a difficult decision, but I knew my hometown would never help me achieve the goals I have in life.
